From the beginning of its history, Saint Petersburg has been a special city. It was invisioned to be a European Imperial Capital, built according to the desires of one man - Peter the Great. Even at its inception, the difficulties of making Peter’s obsession a reality were overwhelming. The area had only recently been taken by the Russian Empire from the Sweden. The climate was harsh. The proposed building site was located in a swamp surrounded by virgin wood. But nothing could stand in a way of Peter The Great desire and in the time since 1703 Saint Petersburg has stood the test of time, struggled mightily, gone through several name changes, but, nevertheless flourished and is today one of the largest and the most beautiful metropolis in Europe

and the only one that’s called with admiration The Venice of the North.

Cultural Icons

The first building in Saint Petersburg was the Peter and Paul Fortress. From its fortress city beginnings, Saint Petersburg has added numerous cultural icons to its cultural landscape. From the gigantic Hermitage to the small “apartment museums” of Russia’s greatest poets, writers and scientists there is something for everyone to see in Saint Petersburg. Visitors to Saint Petersburg don’t even need to visit a museum to appreciate the history of the city. Saint Petersburg is home to numerous architectural monuments- The entire center of Saint Petersburg has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
